UPDATE: Facebook Cover Image Size

UPDATE

I was playing around with the new Facebook Timeline [the "playing around with it" happened during Beta period ] and realized that people are going to want to get creative with the new Cover image feature [check out some creative ideas on socialmediaexaminer.com].

Here are the dimensions for your Facebook Cover image:

  • 850 px wide
  • 315 px tall (minimum) – you can reposition your Cover image so you can make it as tall as you want but only the 850×315 area will be seen.

Keep in mind that the Facebook iPhone app version 4.1 (includes Timeline update) displays a slightly different ratio of profile-picture to cover-image .

For now, use the 850 px by 315 px and you’ll have near poifect results on both mobile and desktop, see:

Hope this little nugget of info helps you out.

I’d love to see how creative you can get with your FB cover images. Post a link or screenshot on Twitter and tag me @mysocialnuggets.

Happy Socializing!

Are you positive? I came up with 851 pixels (width) by 315 pixels (height). I'm hoping to get creative with my cover image, too.

Hi Abel. 850 x 315 seems to be the magic number! I wrote this post during Beta testing on Timeline and 833 x 310 worked just fine at the time. I say keep your design simple since the look on a mobile device will vary slightly. Thanks for the comment :)

This actually did not work for me... But I think this is a Facebook flaw because it would not let me drag and move the picture (the photo had words to the right of it, but facebook kept cutting it off even though the photo was actually within the specs you gave).

Hmm.. I'm sorry you had trouble :/ Try making the image longer than it should so you can drag and place it where you want it. FYI: some other websites will add a couple of extra pixels - which shouldn't make a huge difference. Check out my FB cover image in my profile here www.facebook.com/mysocialnuggets. Let me know if I can help you with anything! MG

Worked for me, I had been messing about trying to figure out the best size and then thought I'll bet someone has already done this. 5 minutes later I was sorted out and my image was in place. I haven't been too adventurous yet but it fits the envelope and looks OK for a starting point. I have put my Facebook page as the website address if anyone wants a look.

Does anybody know how many PX the profile picture is??

Looks like the Cover Pic on FB Groups has changed because they have changed the group layout - vertically stretched. If anyone finds out the new pixel size - please post. I will also play around. Must be bigger than 315 px in height.

Sorry - I realised the groups used to be 850 x 200 px, but now they are the same as profile cover pics. 850 x 315 px. Please delete previous post. Sorry for wasting the mods time. :-O

Actually it is somewhere between 250 and 300 pix in height. Need to play around with it. Maybe edit my 3 posts to be useful for others. ;-)

Do you know how it is possible to include an attribution for a Facebook cover photo, e.g., for a photo obtained from Wikimedia Commons?

I would add it as a description to the cover photo. Click on your cover photo, and click on the link "add a description." Add the photo credit to this section. This is just my suggestion!

For some reason, my profile photo looks different a lot between desktop and iPhone. I tried to fix it by resize it to 851X350 but still the same. In my desktop, it looks perfect but in my iPhone, it got cutoff in either landscape or portrait mode. Any idea? Thanks. /Bruce

Unfortunately, the iPhone FB app distorts the cover image photo. It looks different even when you flip your phone sideways. I'm sorry, not much that can be done there with specific sizing; however, you can maybe do something cool visually where the focal point is closer to your profile pic.
